Creation of Godspeed Artwork

I get a lot of e-mails asking how I went about producing the artwork for Godspeed, so I‘ve set this page up for those of you who wanted to know - I hope you find it helpful.

STEP 1: THUMBNAIL
After reading the script, I create a thumbnail for each page. These are only small (about 10cm high), but they help me to plan the layout of the page without wasting too much time and also enable me to explore many layout variations in the time it would take to draw up one to actual size.

STEP 2: PENCIL
Once I’m happy with a layout, I enlarge the thumbnail to actual size and retrace it as a tighter pencil drawing.

STEP 3: INK
Then I apply black ink over the pencil drawing. For Godspeed I used ink pens but sometimes I ink-in using brushes - I guess it comes down to using what you’re most comfortable with.

STEP 4: COLOUR
Finally I add the colours. For Godspeed I used Pantone markers as they have really good reproductive colours. Again this is down to preference. Sometimes I use liquid inks or gouache. One day I’ll learn how to colour my work digitally, but until then…
